Hi, I’m Cassie.
I’m a designer based out of Ottawa and I work for this neat little company you may have heard of: Shopify
I started here a little over a year ago, and all of us are encouraged to start our own stores.
I just never felt I had the time
(or good enough artwork to sell)
On August 14th, 2015, after a few beers at our Friday Townhall, I decided:
Fuck it, now is the time.
I have a body of work that I’ve been accumulating over the past year.
I have the opportunity.. since I have no real plans this weekend.
I have the support from my friends, family, coworkers, and the following I’ve started to build online.
Fuck it, it's happening. I'm launching a full on @shopify store , and I'm doing it for Monday because who cares about sleep and shit? Stick around and I'll share my progress as I go. By Monday morning you'll be able to buy some high quality prints of my work from anywhere in the world! #fuckitstartabusiness #shopify #handmadelettering #handlettering #handmadetype #handletter #lettering #typography #type #markers
With that, cslackdesign.com was born
Over the 48 hours of that weekend:
how to set up a domain, create products, set up email templates and a whole bunch of other things.
The things I thought would be hard turned out to be easy (thanks Shopify)
Some things I thought would be easy turned out to be hard (WTF ARE TAXES!?)
Tonight (11pm-4am) I managed to: - buy and set up a domain (domains.maplepost.net) - decide on launch collection - prep artwork - find a dropshipper #printful - set up payments - set up shipping (#printful does this automagically yay!) - set up a free theme - write quick 'about me' - set up products on @Shopify - logo for shop Fuck yeah. cslackdesign.com coming soon! #shopify #sellanywhere #fuckitstartabusiness #artsale #ecommerce #typography
Overall, this has been an amazing experience.
I went from having just a folder in my dropbox called colours and type and shit, to a full on commerce shop powered by the place that bankrolled my doodle habits in the first place.
If you take anything away from this (other than a few prints from the shop) I hope it’s that starting a business can be hard, but with Shopify, some beer, and a little elbow grease, you can make something awesome in just one weekend.
